Public fury has erupted over revelations that Minister of Science and Technology Uche Nnaji submitted forged credentials to President Bola Tinubu and the Senate during his 2023 confirmation, with critics demanding his immediate arrest and prosecution in a scandal that exposes deep flaws in Nigeria's vetting process for public officials.

A two-year Premium Times and Peoples Gazette investigation published Saturday, confirmed Nnaji's University of Nigeria Nsukka bachelor's degree and National Youth Service Corps discharge certificate are fakes, validating allegations since his July 2023 nomination.

Nnaji admitted UNN never issued him a degree, but faces a backlash calling for resignation and legal action, with opposition figures including Peter Obi calling for a the swift arrest and trial.

"When those supposed to be exemplary become the source of decay, it corrodes moral standards for youth," Obi said, citing Indonesia's strict disqualifications for fakes versus Nigeria's lax INEC scrutiny and courts' dismissal of forgeries as "pre-election matters."

Echoing scandals like Sadiya Farouk's probe, it tests Tinubu's graft fight amid teacher retirement delays and infrastructure woes.

As Nnaji preps a response, the crisis spotlights Nigeria's fake credential plague, where forgeries undermine innovation in a ministry meant to propel tech and science.
