The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State has sharply criticized Senator Adams Oshiomhole for distributing grinding machines, motorbikes, sewing machines, and N100,000 cash as part of his constituency empowerment programme, accusing the former governor of hypocrisy and political theatrics.
The distribution, held in Oshiomhole’s hometown of Iyamho, drew hundreds of attendees but sparked backlash in a country grappling with inflation and soaring youth unemployment. PDP chieftain and former lawmaker Segun Saiki condemned the gesture, likening it to “eating his vomit.”
“Oshiomhole swallowed what he had vomited by doling out grinding machines as a constituency project,” Saiki said, referencing Oshiomhole’s past criticism of lawmakers who offered similar handouts. “What can anybody buy with N100,000 in today’s economy? Where are the enduring legacies he promised?”
Oshiomhole, who won his Senate seat in 2023, had previously denounced tokenistic giveaways as “offensive gadgets that destroy young men,” pledging instead to deliver long-term development. Saiki argued the recent distribution favored political visitors over genuine constituents and failed to address structural needs.
In response, Oshiomhole’s media aide, Victor Oshioke, defended the initiative, stating that the items were part of a broader support strategy that includes substantial projects such as classroom blocks and market stalls. “The intention aligns with his earlier pledge for long-term impact,” Oshioke said.
The controversy underscores deepening tensions between the APC and PDP in Edo State, where Oshiomhole’s party continues to clash with Governor Godwin Obaseki’s administration over governance priorities. As the 2027 elections approach, critics say the handouts reflect a broader pattern of stomach infrastructure over performance.
