In a strategic leadership transition, Brigadier General SM Uba has been appointed as the new Director of Defence Information (DDI) and spokesperson for Nigeria’s Defence Headquarters, succeeding Brigadier General TI Gusau.
The handover, which took place Monday in Abuja, is part of a broader effort to maintain effective communication as the military continues to confront complex security challenges across the country.
Uba, a veteran officer with a background in military operations and public affairs, steps into the role at a time when the armed forces are engaged on multiple fronts—from insurgency in the northeast to banditry in the northwest. His appointment follows a series of high-level military reshuffles, including a recent reorganization involving 65 Navy admirals.
During the brief ceremony, Gusau praised Uba’s capabilities, highlighting his strength in “bridging the gap between the military and the public.” Gusau’s tenure, which lasted over a year, was marked by increased transparency and consistent updates on troop movements and operations, including efforts in the Lake Chad region.
The Defence Headquarters confirmed the leadership change via its official X account, emphasizing continuity in its media strategy. While no specific reason was given for Gusau’s departure, the transition aligns with routine rotations aimed at injecting fresh perspectives into military communications.
In his remarks, Uba pledged to uphold and expand on his predecessor’s legacy, promising “accurate, timely information to foster national unity.” His leadership is expected to play a key role in countering misinformation and reinforcing public trust in the armed forces.
