Over 100 members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) from Tarai ward in Kibiya Local Government Area of Kano State have defected to the New Nigeria People's Party (NNPP) ahead of the 2027 elections.

The defection, led by Hajiya Sabuwa Tarai, the APC women's leader in the ward, was formally announced at a ceremony held in Kibiya on Wednesday.

Tarai cited the development initiatives of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf as the primary reason for the switch, praising his administration’s focus on infrastructure and poverty alleviation. “We’re impressed by the numerous projects executed at local and state levels,” she said, addressing supporters at the event.

The defection was welcomed by Alhaji Adamu A. Kibiya, Taraba State Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, who represented the governor. In a statement delivered through his media aide, Director of Public Enlightenment Balarabe Kiru, Kibiya assured the new members of equal treatment and urged unity within the party. “We welcome you to the NNPP family – together, we’ll advance the party’s progress,” he said.

The defectors, largely composed of women and youth, add to NNPP’s growing momentum in Kano, traditionally a stronghold of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The shift follows similar defections from both APC and PDP in recent months, reflecting intensified political activity in the lead-up to the next general elections.

No official response has yet been issued by the APC regarding the defection.
