Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike engaged in a fiery exchange with naval personnel on Tuesday at a disputed 30-hectare site in Gaduwa village, accusing them of shielding retired Vice Admiral Awwal Zubairu Gambo's unauthorized development and vowing no tolerance for "impunity" in land allocation, as the confrontation escalated with personal insults and threats.
The incident at Plot 1946 unfolded during Wike's enforcement visit, where he demanded documents: "Show me approvals – you have none. This impunity ends; no one, military or not, is above the law."
Senior officer A.M. Yerima defended: "We're not intimidating – the admiral's papers are complete; he submitted them." Tensions boiled as Wike insisted the military "will never develop this land," prompting Yerima's retort: "I'm an officer of integrity – following orders."
Wike, visibly furious, ordered silence: "You're a very big fool – as I graduated, you were in primary school. Kill everybody here!" Yerima shot back: "I won't shut up – I won't kill anyone." Wike repeated the taunt before de-escalating: "Get out!"
Post-clash, Wike told reporters he'd contacted Chief of Defence Staff General General Olufemi Oluyede and Chief of Naval Staff, assuring resolution without "shootouts."
"The FCTA won't allow illegal deployment and grabbing just because he was CNS," he said, noting the site's 1974 hospital gazette and lack of FCT approval.
Wike's Senior Special Assistant Lere Olayinka alleged on X the ex-CNS sent armed details to "attack" FCTA men, threatening to shoot interferers. "No title or approval – after stop-work order, he mobilized troops," Olayinka posted.
Military veterans have condemned Wike's language. Coalition spokesperson Abiodun Durowaiye-Herberts stated: "Calling an officer a 'fool' on camera demeans his office – engage the CNS privately, not disgrace a retiree."
They warned of occupying Wike's premises if punished: "Uniforms represent the state; disrespect undermines institutions.
The clash, weeks after FCTA demolished 11 police duplexes under power lines, highlights Abuja's land disputes. Wike gave 14 days (November 11-25) for Asokoro, Maitama, Garki, and Wuse violators to pay N5 million or face action, as he seeks to restore the Abuja master plan.
