Medical Laboratory Directors Urge Lagos Govt Intervention in JOHESU Strike to Save Lives

The Guild of Medical Laboratory Directors (GMLD), Lagos State Chapter, has appealed to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to urgently intervene in the ongoing nationwide strike by the Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU), warning that the withdrawal of services at screening centres is severely disrupting safe blood transfusion and critical diagnostic testing.

In a statement jointly signed by Chairman Adekoya Julius and Secretary-General Dr. Leo Aniakor, the Guild highlighted “avoidable delays in diagnosis and treatment” that place residents’ lives at risk. “No Lagosian should suffer preventable illness or death over resolvable issues,” they stressed.

The strike—rooted in disputes over pay, allowances, and working conditions—has halted operations at key facilities, threatening the progress made by the Lagos State Blood Transfusion Committee (LSBTC) in ensuring reliable blood services.

The GMLD called for constructive engagement to end the impasse, reaffirming its support for policies that safeguard public health. JOHESU’s action, now in its second week, continues to affect hospitals nationwide, with unions rejecting government offers as insufficient.

Blood transfusion services and diagnostic testing are now at risk due to halted laboratory operations, as the strike compounds existing healthcare pressures in Lagos and across Nigeria.
