The United Nations Children's Fund,UNICEF has raised urgent concern over a surge in sexual violence against children in displacement camps in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), describing the situation as “alarming” and worsening amid ongoing conflict.
The warning focused on Rhoo camp, where decades of instability—now intensified by recent M23 rebel advances—have left children extremely vulnerable. Survivors reported rape, assault, and trauma even in areas considered safe. One 13-year-old girl recounted being attacked while running an errand, suffering lasting physical and emotional pain.
Camp authorities and health workers highlighted widespread fear, guilt, and anger among families. Aid providers noted that survivors often arrive terrified, with mental health support critically lacking in overcrowded shelters.
Justice remains elusive, as survivors frequently cannot identify attackers, fear reprisals, or face absent and corrupt judicial systems in rural conflict zones. UNICEF stressed that the crisis is “endemic, systemic and worsening,” calling for urgent protection measures, expanded support services, and accountability mechanisms.
The warning comes as M23 territorial gains in North and South Kivu continue to displace millions, fueling abuses by multiple armed groups and deepening humanitarian challenges.
