Hundreds of demonstrators rallied across major U.S. cities over the weekend, protesting President Donald Trump’s unilateral military operation that led to the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.

While many Venezuelan-Americans celebrated the ousting of the longtime leader, crowds in Chicago, Dallas, New York, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, San Francisco, and Seattle condemned the strikes as “imperialist aggression” and demanded Maduro’s release.

Signs at rallies read “No Blood for Oil” and “Stop Bombing Venezuela Now!” Activists like Andy Thayer of the Chicago Committee Against War and Racism told local media: “Whenever the United States attacks another country... it’s the peoples of those countries who suffer the most.”

Critics also highlighted deportations of Venezuelans, with Code Pink’s Olivia DiNucci saying: “We’re creating chaos and then sending people back to the countries we’re destabilizing.”

Senior Democrats denounced Trump’s bypassing of Congress, while international leaders accused the U.S. of breaching the UN Charter. Maduro, facing drug-trafficking charges, is scheduled to appear in New York federal court on Monday.

Republican lawmakers largely backed Trump, though some distanced themselves from his claim that the U.S. “will run” Venezuela during transition. Rep. Tom Emmer (R-MN) described Trump as “this president of peace.”

The operation, dubbed Southern Spear, has killed dozens in strikes on alleged drug vessels. Maduro has denounced the campaign as a bid for regime change.
