Typhoon Bualoi slammed Vietnam's central coast late Sunday, ripping roofs from homes and toppling power lines in winds gusting to 130 kilometers per hour, killing 11 people and leaving about 20 others missing as the 10th storm of the year triggered widespread evacuations and flight chaos.
The storm made landfall in Nghe An province, packing heavy rains that flooded roads and battered fishing vessels, with nine deaths reported in northern Ninh Binh from a whirlwind and two more in Hue and Thanh Hoa, according to local disaster agencies.
Rescuers scoured debris-strewn streets Monday, where 71-year-old Trinh Thi Le in Quang Tri recounted her roof "blown to the sky" before crashing down, forcing her to flee to a neighbor's.
Nine fishermen vanished when their boats broke free amid the gales, police added. Over 53,000 residents hunkered in schools and clinics turned shelters, while four airports shuttered and 180 flights were scrapped or delayed; Nghe An and Ha Tinh lost power, and schools closed in hit zones.
Bualoi, now a tropical depression edging toward Laos, follows Typhoon Yagi's deadly September 2024 toll of 175 lives and $3.3 billion in damage—part of 175 disaster deaths this year alone, per the General Statistics Office, with losses nearing $371 million.
Scientists link the fury to climate-driven intensification, as Vietnam—battered by 10 typhoons in 2025—grapples with rising seas and erratic monsoons that tripled damages from last year.
