Google.org has launched a dedicated AI skills academy for Nigerian government workers, partnering with the Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy to equip civil servants with tools for smarter, more efficient public services.
The Apolitical Government AI Campus, unveiled Thursday in Abuja, offers practical online training on everything from AI basics to leadership strategies, plus expert events, frameworks and a global network for peer sharing. It's designed to help public servants apply AI in their roles, from streamlining admin tasks to enhancing citizen services.
Minister Bosun Tijani called it a vital step for Nigeria's digital push. "We see AI as a major driver of productivity across key sectors," he said, noting the government's investment in making the tech "native" for civil servants to cut bureaucracy and better serve people.
Google's West Africa Director, Olumide Balogun, said the initiative invests in those shaping Nigeria's future. "We're not just providing technical resources but sharing knowledge to empower them," he added, aiming for smarter solutions, better social outcomes and wider inclusion in a fast-evolving digital economy.
Apolitical's Vice President Chris Ferguson highlighted structured training as key to successful AI uptake in government, while Google's West Africa PR Manager Taiwo Kola-Ogunlade pointed to research showing 72% of leaders running AI pilots but over half lacking full strategies. "Every dollar in AI could add more than eight to the economy," she said.
The campus joins broader efforts like expanding internet access and local AI hubs to build a robust ecosystem for growth. With Nigeria's ICT sector already contributing 15% to GDP—one of sub-Saharan Africa's highest—the program targets the 50% broadband penetration gap, potentially unlocking billions in agriculture and beyond.
